How Long a Ride-On Battery Lasts, and How to Keep It

A ride-on battery is not the part that fails. It is the part that gets killed, usually by being left flat over a winter, and almost always by accident.

Handled properly a lithium pack should give several years of weekend use. Handled the way most of them are handled, it gives one.

How long a charge should last

Ride time depends on capacity, the rider’s weight, and the ground. The same machine that runs an hour on smooth concrete with a light child will run considerably less on lawn with a heavier one, because grass is the single biggest drain there is.

Machine Stated range Realistic afternoon
Trail 36 Up to 24 km A long session on mixed ground
Haul 22 Up to 19 km A full afternoon on a driveway, less with two aboard

Two riders halves nothing exactly, but it does cost you range, and it is worth expecting.

The four things that shorten a pack’s life

1. Storing it flat

This is the big one. A lithium pack left at empty for months can discharge past the point where a charger will recognise it, and then it is finished. If the machine is going away for the season, charge it first, and top it up every couple of months.

2. Charging it hot

Let the pack cool after a long session before putting it on the charger. Charging a hot battery is harder on it than charging a cool one, and in an Australian summer a machine that has been out on concrete all afternoon is genuinely hot.

3. Leaving it on the charger indefinitely

Take it off when it is done. A good charger stops, but leaving a pack sitting on a charger for a week at a time is a habit worth not having.

4. Running it completely flat, repeatedly

Occasionally is fine. As a routine it is not. When the machine noticeably slows, that is the signal to stop, not a reason to push on until it stops by itself.

When it is the battery and when it is not

A machine that will not run is not always a dead pack. Before buying anything, work through why a ride-on stops charging, because a loose connector and a tripped cut-off both look exactly like a flat battery.

If the pack genuinely is finished, a replacement is usually far cheaper than a new machine. The Trail 36 replacement pack is the same removable unit the quad ships with, sold with its charger.

Two packs

If you use the machine hard, a second pack is the upgrade that actually changes the day. One is on the charger while the other is in the machine, and the afternoon does not stop at the point the first one runs down.
